The Journey

From passion project to professional practice

Marcus discovered his passion for upcycled design during university years while renovating his family's Sheung Wan apartment in 2010. What started as a personal project evolved into something bigger when friends and neighbors began requesting his design services. They saw something in his work — authenticity, respect for materials, and a genuine care for creating spaces that felt alive.

After completing his degree at the Hong Kong Design Institute in 2012, he spent three years working hands-on with local antique dealers and salvage yards across Hong Kong. That wasn't just research — it was apprenticeship. He learned how to spot quality vintage pieces, understand their stories, and imagine their second lives in modern homes. Every salvage yard visit, every restoration project taught him something about materials, craftsmanship, and what makes a space feel authentic.

By 2015, he'd established himself as a freelance consultant, and the work kept growing. Over 200 Sai Ying Pun residents have since worked with him to transform their industrial lofts into warm, character-filled homes. In 2019, he joined Reclaim & Restore Limited as Senior Design Consultant, where he combines meticulous material sourcing with thoughtful spatial design.

Marcus is driven by a simple belief: Sai Ying Pun's industrial lofts deserve interiors that honor their heritage while embracing sustainable practices. He doesn't follow trends. He creates spaces that tell authentic stories — where every piece of reclaimed wood, every vintage fixture, every restored element has purpose and history.

Design Philosophy

How he approaches every project

Marcus doesn't believe in one-size-fits-all design. Every loft has its own story — the building's industrial past, the resident's lifestyle, the way light moves through the space at different times of day. His process starts by listening to all of that.

He spends time in each space before proposing anything. He walks through it. He notices where people naturally gather, how the natural light changes, what materials already exist in the bones of the building. Then comes the material research. He'll visit salvage yards, antique dealers, and reclamation centers to find pieces that feel right — not just visually, but historically. A wooden beam from a factory, a set of industrial shelving, vintage tile work. Things with provenance.

The goal isn't to make the space look expensive or trendy. It's to make it feel authentic. A space where the past and present coexist without feeling forced. Where reclaimed wood lives alongside modern comfort. Where vintage fixtures enhance rather than dominate.

What drives this work is a belief that sustainability and beauty aren't separate. When you choose quality vintage pieces, when you restore rather than replace, when you design for longevity — you're making choices that benefit both the environment and the home. That's not a compromise. That's the point.

"Every piece of reclaimed material carries history. The challenge isn't to erase that history — it's to honor it while creating something new. That's where real design happens."
